It takes a bit of time to forget, but I do forget my old writing. And I am a different person now. I haven't written a fanfic in years. Now my fanworks consist of tumblr gifs and fan videos, but I do like to go back and check my old AO3 stats, and occasionally I will look at my old writings and see both my typos and failures along side some pretty good bits of writing that I forgot existed. So today I was reading Devil John, a story i wrote on commission back in 2015, and I found this nice piece of writing.
"John breathes out and the world materializes around him painting itself in, shadow by shadow, until the room is revealed in shimmering shades of darkness. He is at 221B Baker Street. Home.

Breathing in he smells familiar scents: The elegant dust which settles on the bookshelves and drapes. The odd chemical tang of one of Sherlock's forgotten experiments. The chalky taste of bone. The traitorous smell of cigarette smoke.

He catches his image in the mirror. His face is dark, shadowed, threatening. His black eyes shine like moonlight on an obsidian knife. He doesn't look human.

Black Dragon Blood burns when it goes down, but it settles inside John's bones as a warm heat that glows like anger. He feels dangerous."

Love it!
Show me a post of your writing. Do you forget your old works too?

The prompt was spectrophilia (Ghost Sex)
It got to me because ghosts in Harry potter can’t touch. How would they...do it?
I also wondered when. Lupin dies only a couple of years after Harry. Was this sex between two ghosts? What was happening in the time when Sirius was dead but Lupin still alive.

It was a challenge.

That’s what enchanted me about it.
I started four times, and only finished it an hour ago.

For a purist like myself, a Harry Potter fic takes work. I listened to two audio books and searched through three more aswell ad Pottermore for details. There was so much I had to cut out, but the deadline came, so I braved the story finishing it, and Now I leave it with you. Please give feedback if you like.

The Summoning

alessnox: Aless Nox - A writer (Default)
So one of the joys of writing is pushing your limits, and one of my pushiest fan fictions was Tango de Venezuela.https://archiveofourown.org/works/6003346/

The story was set at the end of the nineties. A Mycroft Holmes story set in his twenties when Sherlock was seventeen. It was challenging because it was a dance fic set in a “canon” gap that was never described in the stories. Mycroft takes Sherlock on his first government mission to Venuzuela.

It is challenging for several reasons. First, I have never been to Venuzuela. Second, I don’t speak Spanish that well  especially not South American Spanish. Third, I don’t know how to tango, and this is all about the Tango.

I was inspired to write it because of my love of a particular male/male tango couple. I imagined the flamboyant dancer (Juan Segui,) as Sherlock, but no amount of imagination could make the other dancer John, so I figured that the only man Sherlock trusts enough to hold him in the air one-handed is Mycroft. I wrote the first story, The Tango, about this dance. But it ended with a promise of a later performance. Then I saw this dance and that, as they say, is history.

But as I was reading it again today, I realized that it wasn’t until 2000 that people had cameras on their phones. The woman filming was very rich, so perhaps she had the first Japanese model. Even so...  Her father has a video tape collection, so it’s not all anacronistic but.... perhaps I can get away with it given the Sherlock world is slightly more technologically advanced because he gets 4G reception in the subways when 3D was the highest available at the time.
It is so-teeth clenching to find errors in my work, but I kind of want to know how many things I got wrong. I am mortally afraid that the Spanish makes no sense as I used Google translate, anecdotes, and high school Spanish books to check the grammar.
Then again, taking chances and is a good thing. Cheers.

I decided to use this time free from Tumblr to check up on other sites that I am signed up on.
I changed my AO3 options to send notifications whenever I get a kudo. I used to have all but comments blocked. Anyway, I got a Kudo today! Yay!

Did you ever get a kudo and think, "Wow, I forgot I wrote that."
Well I did.
I have so many stories that I forget them, and that is a good thing, because I can go back and read it anew.

The biggest problem is finding all the typos and thinking, I left that in for how many years?
alessnox: Aless Nox - A writer (Default)
I like to think that I am good at endings, but my beginnings often need work.  Here are some first paragraphs from my FanFiction stories that are currently unfinished. I'm thinking that if I can improve the beginning, I may be inspired to finish the work.

Hooded in Red
There was a crime wave in the city of London. Robberies, car thefts, even murders were on the rise. It seemed as if all Hell had broken loose since Sherlock Holmes had died. Most people didn't connect the two, but DI Lestrade did. His unsolved case files were almost as large now as his solved ones. Lestrade could honestly say that he missed Sherlock. He knew that he wasn't a fake, even though he saw the articles and the pictures in the paper calling him a trickster, a magician, a Svengali, and accusing him of fooling people, even Scotland Yard, into believing that he could solve crimes.
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9494613/1/Hooded-in-Red

Huh, sounds a bit unfocused.
Needs to be snappier, tighter. Perhaps with a bit of a film noir feel.
It's a detective work based on a fairy tale (little red riding hood) so it either needs more dark, or more myth.

Mycroft - Cypher

I: 15 June, 2012
Her majesty's location Nottingham, the diamond jubilee, State of Emergency declared in Burma, More requests from the Greek government. Heavy rains predicted. Bring Umbrella.

II: His forced confession had done its job. Mycroft Holmes had received the one thing that the government had always been loathe to give him. Time off. He used that time to make arrangements for Sherlock to leave the country. He had been involved in some delicate negotiations. It wasn't a good time to be distracted from his work, but then again, his little brother always had been a distraction.

This time, however, his interests and Mycroft's were aligned. Moriarty had been a thorn his side time and time again. A chaotic element in the shifts of power that kept the world running smoothly. Who would guess that James Moriarty would have become infatuated with his little brother? Who would have guessed that Sherlock Holmes would allow himself to die to the world, would allow the media to call him an idiot, just to destroy this criminal's network? It was surprising. But then, Sherlock had always been surprising ever since he was a child, back when his greatest ambition was to be a pirate. Although Mycroft would never admit it, Sherlock made his life bearable, because he always had a way of doing the unexpected.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9993229/1/Mycroft-Cypher

Nice. Has some good points. Starts a bit slow on II. I could probably tighten it up a bit. Cut it down smaller. On the other hand, my chapters are short enough as it is. Hmm. Must think about it.

Silent Night, Deadly night

Sherlock crawled across the tiles. He traced the footprint on the floor with the tip of his finger and then looked up at the aisle. It had been cleared of people, but their remains were still there, their muddy prints, the scuff marks left behind from their frightened exit. Those crowded steps made as they rushed from the room remained, obscuring the path of the one woman that he sought to find. The woman who he had lived in the same flat with for the better part of a month. The woman who was married to his best friend.

This line of investigation was unlikely to yield a useful result, so he rose to his feet and turned to the policeman at his side. Lestrade was on the phone arguing furiously with someone apparently about the decision of the yard to close down one of London's busiest department stores on Christmas eve.
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10596829/1/Silent-Night-Deadly-night

This is the story that wouldn't die. My first story on FFnet was Moving. It was one of the first that I moved to AO3. It spawned two separate sets of sequels with the same name. I was never happy with the ending so I keep rewriting it in the hopes that it will finally work. This is the last chapter, set at Christmas time, so this is a perfect time to end a story series that I began in July of 2012

I like how it starts with action. It gets you wondering what is happening, and the thing about having lived with the woman and her being married to his best friend is even more curious if you haven't followed the previous series. I just recently got a request to finish this work, so I should probably get a move on.

The Black Scorpion
The dark-haired Lieutenant Lestrade stood at attention as the red coated official took the stage to address the crowd. He lifted his parchment and read.

"In the name of the king, an armada of ships will carry a payment of ten thousand gold coins to the King of France as a sign of our continued friendship. In return, the French crown has stated that they will aid us in patrolling our coastal waters. With the combined navies of France and England patrolling the channel, piracy will be a thing of the past, and our waters will once more be at peace."

"Peace? poppycock!" a man in the crowd muttered. "You know that money they are sending to buy off the French king will return to us before long as cannon balls." A number of heads around him nodded. They all stepped back making way as the men marched off of the stage. The man who spoke of cannons bumping into a dirty beggar who was standing behind him.

"Spare a penny, Guv?" said the stooped figure in a dirty brown coat and tattered grey hat that looked like it had been fished from the jaws of several fighting cats. The man walked past without another glance, and the beggar shuffled away stopping for a moment to look up at a poster stuck to a lamp post. It had the picture of a thin man in a long coat with a three cornered hat and a curled black mustache with the words REWARD for SHERLOCK, The Pirate. Captain of the Black Scorpion. DEAD OR ALIVE emblazoned on the base. If one looked closely, one might have imagined that the beggar smiled.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10712939/1/The-Black-Scorpion

This is my pirate AU because "Why not?"
I left them freezing to death in a cold ocean. Not quite the happy go lucky ending that the story sets out to show.
Cute opening. You can guess who the beggar is can't you. I'm saving this for days when I need something really light.

University Days

Sherlock was finally beginning to settle in at Cambridge. He had been so excited to come, almost ecstatic. Mycroft had remarked on it as they sat down to dinner four months before. He'd said that Sherlock was 'as eager as an English Setter'. He had replied by calling Mycroft fat, but it was true. He had been eager, because he had heard that University was a new start, a place where he would be valued for his intellect. He had moved onto campus with a glee that made him almost appear to be a happy person, and not the morose teen that he had been all those years in Private School.

But in this, as in most things, life had not lived up to his expectations. Sebastian had followed him up from Harrow. He had always been a popular bastard, arrogant, and envious of other's talents. He ended up living in the same house and with his slick smile and thinly concealed hostility for Sherlock, he made sure that all of the old nicknames followed him there.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10847721/1/University-Days

This is my current obsession. A Sherlock Holmes prequel. I am struggling with how explicit to make it. The way I write, I mean for it to be a bit embarrassing. I find that the more explicit the work is, the more embarrassing it is when things go wrong.

It's a good start. Gets you into Sherlock's emotions quickly. Not sure about the English Setter line, then again, Sherlock wouldn't be an Irish wolfhound or a poodle so....

Anyway. These are my beginning. Comments welcomed.

Just got tagged by Sylvaine to list ten books that had an influence on you. Actual copy:

Rules: In a text post, list ten books that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard — they don’t have to be the “right” or “great” works, just the ones that have touched you. Tag ten friends, including me, so I’ll see your list. Make sure you let your friends know you’ve tagged them.

So I took out a piece of paper. Wrote ten and then stopped.

This is my list:

1. 1984 by George Orwell

Having lived through this year as a youth. I remember hearing so many commentaries about how we were or were not going toward the future portrayed in this book. This was not a post-apocalyptic depressive future. This was a future that was supposed to happen if the governments kept getting larger and more powerful.

Still scary. Still possible. Still influential.

2. Dragon singer by Anne McCaffrey

I loved Anne McCaffrey's dragon rider books, but this little side series touched me more. This is the story of a girl who loved music but was told that it was not something that a girl like her could ever pursue professionally. Her family hide her because they are ashamed that she will embarrass her, and even do little to help with an injury that could end her career.

She escapes to a school where everyone loves music, and her talents are encouraged. The total worldview change is frightening and confusing to her at first, but when she realizes that she will be able to pursue her dreams, she is very happy.

Also, Masterharper Robinton, is he hot or what?

3. A wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K LeGuin

Sometimes you read a book, especially a book marketed for children that you liked, and when you go back you find that it was not as impressive as it seems. This is not the case for the Wizard of Earthsea trilogy. The books become deeper and more true the older that you get.

I loved the story of Ged who finds that he has magic. His training, his struggles with evil and pride, his fear of his own power which unleashes a great evil on the world, his running, his finding his way, and his facing death. Very powerful.

A also thought that the story in the tombs of Atuan was so cool. The girl raised to be priestess to a nameless evil is so strange and evocative. Unmatched.

4. The Two Towers by JRR Tolkien

I can't talk about writing influences without mentioning the master JRR Tolkien. The reason that I listed this middle book in the series is because of one character, Eowyn.

When the movies came out, and everyone started yelling about how there were no strong female characters, I was confused, because I always identified with Eowyn Lady of Rohan. I mean, she could ride a horse, wield a sword, lead others into and out of battle, and she looked hot in a dress. How could you beat that.

I also was a sucker for her tragic unrequited love of Aragorn. I mean, you had to read really finely to realize that he was already taken, and the way he brushed her off...well believe me, to a teenager that was tragic.

She also was able to pull out the corniest line in the book if not all of fantasy fandom.

KING OF THE NAZGUL "No man may kill me!"

EOWIN removes helm, hair flows down dramatically, " Ha! Well I am no man!" Dead Nazgul follows.

5. The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever by Steven R Donaldson

This was probably my introduction to the concept of the antihero. Man is put into a fantasy universe, and instead of following the rules, discovering his power, and performing the quest like he was meant to, he says that he doesn't give a f*ck and rapes the nearest pretty girl. An act with consequences that continue through the entire series.

Eyeopening. Mindblowing.

6. Cyteen by CJ Cherryh

I already loved this author for her universe created in the hugo winning "Down Below Station" and her Chanur books which are fun space opera, but this glimpse into the lives of the super scientists who design the bodies and minds of Union's bioengineered slave population was something that I had never seen before or since.

In the other series, bioengineered slaves were pitied or feared, and the people who made them were just evil. On this side, where the population is much too small to develop a new world, the bioengineer people are a tool to spread humanity throughout the universe, and to preserve human diversity in the same way that zookeepers think of preserving rare animals.

As a person who tends to over think things, it was cool to read about people who would always be one step ahead of you. Psychologists who spend all of their time trying to figure out what other psychologists are trying to make them think about.

In the end, you pity their screwed up lives, while you wonder what it would be like to have your own personal bioengineered lover, toyboy, dependent, azi. Twisted.

7. Little House on the Prairie by Louisa May Alcott

Here we are back to wholesome. This story of a little girl and her families travels in the Prairies of the American West were inspiring in a way that I never thought they would be. The girl is a sort of unreliable narrator in that she sees thing from her simple view that when you look at it from another way is grand and challenging.

Their lives but up against history, such as when they get kicked out of Oklahoma due to the signing of a treaty. They lose their money when grasshoppers destroy their crops. She sits watching as her father stays up all night to guard them against a wolf pack as they huddle in a cabin with only a quilt over the door, and her father has a rifle that can only shoot one bullet at a time.

I can't help but be impressed by the skills of her parents, and the honest open style of her writing is so accessible. It clearly describes a moment in time, and it will always be classic.

8. The silver metal lover by Tanith Lee

This is a novella or a short story, not a novel. It sticks in my mind for two reasons. One, because it was one of my first stories with a sex scene, and with an android no less. Second, because once I put it back in the library, I couldn't find it again.

This is one of my noted examples of the impermanence of written work. I had been raised to believe that things that were written down as books lived forever, but pulp science fiction and fantasy had limited runs, and if they weren't popular, they were never reprinted. This was a minor work by an older author, and after a while, no one carried it anymore.

I love the lyricism of this author and other favorites from her include Don't bite the sun and The Flat Earth series or stories which are noteworthy for their fairy tale quality and their dark themes. But when I think of lyrical writing, I think of...

9. Dreamsnake by Vonda McIntyre

I first read this as a novella, and then later bought the novel. When I think of this story, it isn't so much the plot that captivates me, but the imagery and the evocative almost psychedelic nature of the writing,

Also, the idea of bioengineered snakes that delivered medicine in a post-apocalyptic world was very evocative to me.

10. The Snow Queen by Joan Vinge

And we are back to space opera. I loved the idea that this read like a fantasy, but had the underpinnings of science fiction. I loved that this was based on the fairytale "The snow queen" by Hans Christian Anderson which is perhaps my favorite children's story. I loved the idea of the beautiful and corrupt city of carbuncle. The imperialist spacers who were exploiting the natural resources of the natives, and the girl who discovers that she is a clone of the queen who by law must be killed when the regime changes.

There are so many more books if I think about it, such as Dune, and books by George Martin, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett and Collette. But my ten are done.

If you do a list, please put a link in the comments so that I can read it.

(Please spread)

"The Holmsies," the fanfic awards co-hosted by fuckyeahteenlock and sherlockbbcficrecs, check this tag: The Holmsies.

This Tumblr features NSFW content including fanart and NC-17 or Explicit rated fics.

We're high functioning fangirls, do your research.

Hi all!

After months of reading through the THOUSANDS of amazing fics that were submitted to the Holmsies, we’re happy to finally let you know that we’re ready to announce nominations and accept votes.

Nominations were decided by the mods of fuckyeahteenlock and sherlockbbcficrecs. The maximum number of nominations per category is five, but some categories have fewer fics - these categories had fewer submissions than others, and we didn’t feel it would be fair to always include five for every category (e.g., if there were only seven submitted total).

As a reminder from when we started the Holmsies, all the fics on the list should have less than 25,000 hits on AO3 and less than 250 reviews/comments on any other forum - we did calculate hits as of when we received the submissions a few months ago, so there are a small number of fics that have crossed that limit since. They’re still included in the nominations.

You’re always welcome to give us feedback in the notes based on your experience engaging with this contest this year, and we’ll do our best to incorporate the most-often-stated comments when we do this the next time around.

You can access the Google form that we will be using to collect votes HERE. Only one submission per person, please - if you’d like to edit your votes after you’ve finished, you must save the link provided once you hit “submit.” We CANNOT find this for you later!

I've been writing online for over a year now, and as we enter 2014 I find that on Archive of Our Own my stories and related works have gotten 700 Kudos! I'm amazed and pleased. Thank You everyone.
 photo AO3screencap2_zps5eb6c47b.png

I did find it interesting that 100 kudos are for one work "John Uncollared".
That is also a landmark. I have 3 digit kudos on a story!

I am also pleased that I went from a writer of drabbles almost to 366,000 words. I have met a life challenge.

Watch me do my happy dance.
Hurrah!!!

Alright, so we all like writing fanfiction and making podfics etc. It's a passion. It's fun.
But I also have written stories that are not fanfiction but original works. Most of the time no one wants to read original works because they don't know what to expect but this story is special.
My husband liked it and talked people into working with us to produce a FULL CAST AUDIO DRAMA of the work.
See the preview below.

I'd love to hear your comments and suggestion for how we can spread this work and make more. I have an indiegogo fundraiser campaign to burn it to CD and raise money to pay the actors. Please help me spread the word if you can. Thanks.

I started writing FanFiction in the summer of 2012. When I read that early stuff, I see the typos staring up at me. I went to a lecture by a professional writer who talked about the importance of good readers. I found out that having a "Beta Reader" to read work before publication was a fanfiction tradition and began to look for one.

At first I just cold emailed readers and asked for suggestions. I got a work Beta'd and it was great, but my beta was young and I did not feel comfortable asking her to beta M work. Later, I found a community of older women who could help me, but I don't like to ask people to beta things that they don't ship.

Recently, I got an account at Archive of Our Own and there is no personal messaging or other ways to contact people. Not that I know of at least. I assumed that people communicate with each other using other sites, so I decided to ask here. Is there anyone out there who could beta my M work on AO3, or do you know someone that I can ask about this?

The works in question are in the Starcrossed trilogy: Moving, Damaged, and the soon to be released, Runaway.

I appreciate any help or explanations about proper process if I am going about it the wrong way. Details on the work follow. Thanks for listening.

Fandom Snowflake Challenge Day 14

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general

Writing love letters is embarrassing. It makes me blush all red to think about it. I read the post and I knew that I would pass this up because fandom... it isn't something that I have words to describe. I couldn't do it. No.

But then, this morning I woke up early to go to the bathroom. As I was returning I saw a fan fiction story on my computer screen. I ran my eyes across it. A light glance, soft, just taking a look, and I wanted to read it. I glanced at the clock. It was an hour until my alarm would go off, so I sauntered over and sat down. I clicked the mouse caressing the slider down the page as I read.

The words filled my eyes with wonder. Sweet sensations of joy as the story tickled my senses. I leaned closer. I am embarrassed to confess that the story was a bit titillating. It made me feel warm. My eyes flowed down the page slowly, sensually, sucking it all in. It was beautiful. It was arousing.

I kept going down, and down, and down the page. I looked at the scrollbar pleased that I was only halfway finished. Pleased that there was so much more left for me to see, to feel. Then my alarm went off. I laughed out loud.

How often in the morning I have heard that alarm go off and groaned or even cursed. Today I laughed because I was so pleased, so happy to have spent some time with a work of fiction that I liked...no loved. Fan fiction is a work of love. Why hide it. How often have I been out waiting for the the time when I can come back to it. Peeking at it briefly at lunchtime or during breaks. Coming home to find it waiting for me, and knowing that there is always something new. Always something fresh there for me. Amazing.

I can't tell you how much happier it made me to find a world of stories and podcasts and people like me who read it, who write it, and who love it. It's embarrassing. I drop my eyes and my cheeks flush as I say, "I love you."

Day 12
In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you think would make a good intro into XYZ fandom. Rec a fandom overview, a introductory picspam, stories that define and shape the fandom. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Although I feel my humble efforts are poor faced with the enormity of the genre, I thought that I'd start by expanding on a post that I wrote earlier for a friend writing her first Johnlock story. Here we go...wish me luck.

AN INTRODUCTION TO JOHNLOCK

1. It's Sherlock (Bloody) Holmes!

Who hasn't heard of Sherlock Holmes? The stories of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson have been fan favorites since they first came out in the 19th century, but lately there has been a plethora of stories showing these two characters as being romantically involved. These fan fiction stories are collectively called JOHNLOCK ( an abbreviation of John/Sherlock) and the reason that these stories have exploded recently is because of the new BBC television show SHERLOCK that has a younger Holmes than is normally portrayed, and is set in present day London.

In the first episode, Sherlock Holmes meets retired Army Doctor John Watson and they move in together. Their friendship is rapid. The chemistry is electric, and it is an excellent example of a 21st century Bromance (a close non-sexual relationship between two (or more) men[wikipedia]).

So why the interest in writing John/Sherlock fiction now?

Well first off, the actors are gorgeous. I mean just look at them. Second, John Watson in this show is not written as a complete idiot as he normally is. He is actually quite impressive, a doctor and an ace marksman. Very lickable. It doesn't take long for certain impressionable minds to start to wish for reasons to imagine them with their clothes off.

But the real reason is that the characters as drawn in the show have a certain fragile dependency. They are both introduced as slightly broken men. They are talented, but flawed. When they get together, they make a whole greater than its parts, and considering how great they were before, this is saying something! Their friendship is so compelling that it leaves many people wanting more.

2. Why Johnlock?
The point of JohnLock is simple. Take two complex and beautiful characters and somehow get them into bed with each other. This can be quite challenging as the show is quite clear that they are NOT sleeping with each other and that John is NOT gay. Show canon also says that Sherlock is a virgin, and Arthur Conan Doyle canon says that he is basically asexual, therefore making us believe that they would ever have a sexual relationship is difficult. This is part of what makes this genre so compelling. Only the bravest and best writers can succeed at this task, and when they do. It is wonderful.

Lazy Johnlock authors solve this problem simply by saying that all of the facts above are a lie. Sherlock is often portrayed as promiscuous and John as openly gay. This is cheating, but it is fairly common.

A good Johnlock author must make us believe that either we or the characters themselves are mistaken about these facts. Then, we can get them together. The elaborate dance is one of the greatest joys of Johnlock, and many solutions to this problem have been made, some more successful than others.

3. What in the hell are they talking about?
First lets get some vocabulary out of the way,

FIRST TIME

A first time Johnlock is a story that conveys either a first kiss or a first sexual encounter between the two. This is most of the stories I think. Like I said, this is the hard part. Once you get them together you are mostly home free.

So how is this FIRST TIME usually accomplished?

EXPERIMENT

This is a story where the initiator of the romance is Sherlock. He convinces John to do increasingly more intimate acts by saying that it is an experiment.

WOKE UP GAY or WE'RE NOT GAY; WE JUST LOVE EACH OTHER

These are stories where John realizes that he is NOT as heterosexual as he thought when he starts having sexual thoughts about Sherlock.

Some common plot lines include:

  • UNNATURAL CAUSES These are where John and Sherlock are drawn together by some unnatural event. For example, maybe John is a werewolf or were-velociraptor and Sherlock becomes part of his pack and therefore drawn to him.
  • EXTRAORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCES They are about to die (not that uncommon), and one of them admits feelings for the other. They have sex. They may not both be gay, but they want so much to please the other person that they do it anyway because of their strong feelings for each other.

But most Johnlock begins with the affection that the characters already show for each other in the series. There are enough dangerous situations in their everyday life to push the characters into a confession. Because the two are already friends, their greatest fear is usually that a romantic relationship will ruin their friendship and cause them to separate. This is a real fear, and a good Johnlock writer must make us believe that things are better. Writing good Johnlock is a challenge.

The best JohnLock is slow. It is a war of attrition where their defenses are worn away little by little until they can't help but be together. It is a very specialized and interesting form of romance, and after such a build up, you have to have the sex, or (as Moriarty said) "What is the point of this?"

I lie a bit because there are many CUDDLEFICS out there. In these, John and Sherlock have a romantic relationship, but mostly this is shown through cuddling. Most often cuddlefics are ACE!Sherlock. That is John likes Sherlock romantically, but Sherlock remains asexual so cuddles and kisses are as far as he's going to get. As you will see, the Sherlock fandom is a vast sea.

4. Not that I'm homophobic, but why should I read this?

Because Johnlock has some of the best writing on the internet, hands down. The Sherlock fandom is highly educated. Excellent writers flood this genre, and when you have characters as interesting as John Watson and Sherlock Holmes, it draws them like a moth to a flame. Also, the stories vary from incredibly sweet, to extreme Angst, to stories so hot that you think they'll set the mouse on fire. You don't want to miss this stuff. It's Fantabulous!

5. Johnlock recommendations

Here are some stories to start with.
WARNING! - Johnlock stories often deplict graphic homosexual sex including anal sex. If this shocks you be cautious of this genre.

A Visit from a Lady
By Aless Nox

Sherlock flipped the edge of the curtain with his fingers turning to look at John with a smile. “A customer,” he said, “show the lady in.” The doorbell rang and John rushed down the steps returning a few minutes later to raise his eyebrow at Sherlock as he escorted in a woman with long blond hair.

She was dressed all in green, down to her vinyl boots. On someone else, it would have looked a joke, like a pixie or an elf, but on her it brought out the brightness of her golden hair and highlighted the deep green of her eyes.

“Please have a seat Miss ah...what is your name?” Sherlock asked.

John straightened in surprise. ”You don‘t know?” John said, “Don’t tell me you’ve never heard of Marianne Doe?

"Why should I know her?" Sherlock said.

The woman smiled. “This is exactly why I’ve come,” she said, “Mr Holmes, you have a reputation as a heartless man.”

“Is that what you need?” Sherlock asked, “A man without a heart?”

“Yes,” the woman replied fluttering her long, blond eyelashes, “Love is a terrible thing.” she said, “I hate love.”

Sherlock examined the woman from head to toe and then said, “Your life has been threatened. Is there a note?”

“Yes,” she said while unzipping, “He left it on my body.”

Being a steward of the British Nation is hard work, but not, it seems, as hard as taking care of his wild-child younger brother Sherlock. When his loner brother suddenly takes a flatmate, Mycroft wonders what is happening, and who is this Dr. John H. Watson.
Sherlock fanfic
Genre: POV, angst, friendship
Rating: mild - sensuality, allusions to torture, same sex romance,
Words: 16,776

Characters: Mycroft H. & John W.

This story gets the most consistent amount of reads of anything that I have written. It starts at the beginning of series one and ends at Reichenbach, but it never leaves the point of view of Mycroft Holmes.

I started this to explore some inconsistencies that I saw in Mycroft's character. In other portrayals of Sherlock Holmes, Mycroft is far more removed and cold. He and Sherlock hardly ever talk. The overprotective brother shown in BBC's Sherlock is very different from those portrayals. I began to wonder what kind of life this solitary man led. How did he live, what did he value, and especially what did he think of John Watson? This also gave me an opportunity to comment on the John/Sherlock relationship from the outside.

I could have kept Mycroft cold and heartless, but he doesn't come across that way in the show. He actually seems quite affectionate, in his way. In fact, he was very polite and respectful to John after their initial meeting, and I began to wonder if he might feel something more. It was the scene in the coffee shop that got me. Why was Mycroft in a coffee shop with John? Why was he downstairs instead of upstairs pestering his brother? It seemed out of character. Then I thought, this is not the first time that John and Mycroft have met to talk about Sherlock. They must have this entire relationship with each other separate from Sherlock's relationship with John. My eyes widened and my mouth dropped open as I contemplated it. When did it start? What do they discuss? How often do they meet? John isn't getting paid, what does he get out of it? Are they friends?

I imagined a John that was friends with both of the Holmes brothers. WOW, what a strange and special person he must be to be able to accomplish that. And there it began.

In this story, I was able to use a very formal writing structure taking note of the openings and closings of sections and having a bit of a circular ending. As a challenge, it was quite an accomplishment, and I am proud of it.

If you have a chance to read it, tell me what you think.

This is my first post on this site.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Aless Nox and I write Sherlock Fan Fiction. Most of what I write can be found on Fan Fiction.net. I also occasionally make fan videos. I post them on You tube which blocks them after a few months.

It is a bittersweet world, the world of fan works. Caught between the dark and the light, the legal and the illegal. In the past people would write stories and then others would reference them. The Arturian Legends for example were told and retold until we have a rich variety of versions of the story. Fairy tales were told in new guises for new locations creating a richness of culture. Dr Faustus is written and rewritten as Faust. Histories are rewritten as Shakespeare plays. What if all these works were banned because they didn't have proper copyright permissions?

I see so much genius and creativity in the fan community and it hurts me every time I see someone post some disclaimer about how they don't own the work. Writing shouldn't be hostaged to some third party just because they own the rights. People should be allowed to tell stories if they want to creating new tales for our characters just as the tales of the nights of the round table are invented every new generation.

I am a believer in creativity and freedom, and I will post as if I live in a free world, even if I don't.
